Hand wrapping works. For low-volume operations, it's the obvious choice: no equipment cost, no maintenance, simple to train. But at some point the math flips, and machine wrapping becomes cheaper than hand wrapping. Here's how to figure out where that crossover is for your operation.
The cost crossover point
The main driver is pallets per day. At low volumes, hand wrap is fine. At higher volumes, the labor cost of hand wrapping and the higher film consumption of hand film start to exceed the cost of a machine wrapper plus machine film.

Productivity: what the difference looks like on the dock
With a turntable stretch wrapper, the process is simple: a forklift driver drops the palletized load on the turntable, tucks the leading edge of the film between the boxes, hits start, and drives off to get the next load. The machine finishes wrapping while he brings over the next pallet.
Hand wrapping means the operator walks in circles around the pallet, bent over to catch the lower layers, maintaining tension manually the whole time. Operator fatigue is real. At any meaningful volume, it adds up in speed and consistency. Most operations that switch to a machine wrapper find the time savings alone are significant, separate from any film savings.

A stretch wrapper applies film at the same tension, the same number of passes, and the same pattern every time. Hand wrapping varies with the operator, the shift, and how tired they are.

When hand wrap is still the right call
Hand wrapping makes sense when volume is genuinely low, when the operation is too spread out for a central wrapper location, or when pallets vary so much in size and shape that machine wrapping is impractical.
